Start with a consultation, not a plane ticket

Before booking nonrefundable travel, ask the clinic which testing and ultrasound monitoring can be done at home, when treatment requires in-person visits, and what the contingency plan is if your cycle changes. A full IVF cycle is not the same as a required stay abroad, and neither should be assumed from an online calendar.

Lodging: what matters more than a view

Look for a quiet place with comfortable sleep arrangements, reliable transport to appointments, a kitchen or simple food options, and flexible cancellation or date changes. Consider accessibility, elevator access, support from your traveling companion, and nearby pharmacies. Walking distance to a medical appointment can matter more than tourist amenities.

Our planner allows you to edit the number of nights and nightly price. It does not recommend 21 nights as medically necessary; that figure is an example for budgeting only. If you pay a monthly furnished rental rate, account for the full billed period.

Medellín versus Bogotá

Both cities have fertility services, but the availability of a specific treatment, specialist, or matching donor program matters more than generalized city rankings. Bogotá is home to the published-price clinics referenced by our calculator. Do not assume those Bogotá prices apply to providers in Medellín. Review the Bogotá guide and the Medellín guide.

What should your travel budget include?

  • Airfare for you and a companion, if relevant, and any rebooking fees.
  • Transportation on retrieval day; ask the clinic about driving restrictions after sedation.
  • Lodging plus added nights in case the clinic changes the schedule.
  • Food, grocery delivery, appointment transport, and emergency reserves.
  • Local follow-up care after your return and the possibility of a later transfer trip.

Flying after IVF procedures

Only your medical team can advise you on post-procedure symptoms, recovery, complications such as ovarian hyperstimulation, and fitness to fly. Bed rest following embryo transfer is not routinely recommended, but that is not permission to ignore symptoms or make a flight without advice.

Before you decide: Discuss any treatment decisions, travel restrictions, and plans for follow-up care with a qualified fertility specialist. This guide does not provide medical advice or a treatment quote.
